Ginger-based food supplements: the benefits according to scientific research

As we all know, ginger is a flowering plant native to Southeast Asia that belongs to the Zingiberaceae family.

It has a long history of use in medicine: it has been used to aid digestion, reduce nausea, and help fight flu and cold, all characteristics that have led to its use in the making of food supplements.

According to scientific research, ginger has excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which is why it can help reduce oxidative stress, counteracting the formation of free radicals.

Another positive effect, confirmed in numerous clinical studies, sees ginger-based supplements involved in the treatment of nausea and vomiting. In researches conducted on a considerable number of pregnant women, a significant reduction in the symptoms of nausea, typical of the first months of gestation, was found.

Still, in the digestive field, it was highlighted how it can help treat functional dyspepsia or indigestion with no known cause: in individuals who had taken the supplement, gastric emptying occurred in a shorter time than in those who had received the placebo.

The beneficial properties of ginger do not end there: it has also proved to be excellent in the treatment of osteoarthritis, a problem that involves the degeneration of the joints in our body, leading to joint pain and stiffness. People who introduced this supplement experienced significant reductions in pain and associated disability, however, the strong, pungent taste of ginger prompted nearly 22 percent of study participants to give up.

For this reason, at IPS, through our Suractives® division, we have developed various ginger formulations made using our patented technologies called Matris® and Miniactives®, which allow the processing of nutraceutical active ingredients starting from the active ingredient itself (Matris®) or from neutral nuclei of Sugar Spheres (Miniactives®).

Applied to Ginger, these technologies allow to have total masking of unpleasant taste and flavors of the active ingredient while maintaining, at the same time, the kinetic of the absorption process unchanged: in this way, the food supplement will be appreciated even by those who do not like strong flavors.

Furthermore, Matris® and Miniactives® allow having formulations also with a controlled release where the active ingredients are made bio-available in a predetermined time, adjusting the absorption process to different physiological variables such as pH, gastrointestinal motility, presence of food, and more.

IPS can process ginger on behalf of third parties in various formulations suitable for dosages for orodispersible sachets, aqueous suspensions, or single-dose bottles with measuring caps.
