Three benefits of caffeine supplementation during sport activity.

Caffeine is a psychoactive substance with a stimulating effect on the central nervous system mainly linked to its blocking action against adenosine which normally binds to the nerve cells of the brain to slow down their activity.

With its intake, the activity of adenosine is attenuated and the nerve cells become hyperactive: a condition seen as an “emergency” from the pituitary which, therefore, favors the release of norepinephrine, adrenaline and dopamine giving the typical sensation of energy and well-being that we feel after the consumption of a coffee.

For this reason, caffeine is by far the most widespread and consumed psychoactive substance in the world.

Its beneficial effects, however, go far beyond this characteristic and, according to various researches, its supplementation could have beneficial effects in athletes and in people who practice sports at a competitive level.

A study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports showed that caffeine taken before a workout can attenuate perceived exertion, improving endurance in aerobic and anaerobic sports.

Another scientific research, published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning, has shown that its supplementation before physical activity would be able to significantly increase strength in competitive athletes.

But there is much more on caffeine: recent studies show that there would be advantages in its intake after physical activity too: post-workout caffeine supplementation, combined with the intake of fast sugars (such as dextrose), can lead to a glycogen reintegration higher than the carbohydrate intake alone.

IPS, through its Suractives® division, specialized in the processing of raw materials aimed at the production of food supplements, is able to supply controlled-release caffeine made using the patented M.A.T.R.I.S.® technology, a production method which, thanks to the particular granulometry characteristics of the product, allows the active substances a rapid and uniform diffusion in the gastrointestinal tract, maximizing their absorption.

The release profile that characterizes Caffeine MATRIS® RETARD guarantees a prolonged availability of the active ingredient after taking the food supplement, thus favoring its activity during athletic effort and attenuating the perception of fatigue in the medium to long term.

Caffeine MATRIS® RETARD is ideal for formulations intended for sachets, stick packs, capsules, tablets and bottles with measuring cap. The characteristics of the MATRIS® technology allow the production of half-cut tablets while preserving the controlled release profile of the bulk product.

M.A.T.R.I.S.®, is a technology that not only allows the control of the release of active ingredients but allows to obtain a perfect masking of the taste and smell of caffeine, making it usable even for those who least tolerate its flavor.
